What happened: A new survey from Resume Now finds that 97% of employed U.S. workers rely on their own judgment or a colleague’s before turning to AI for a workplace decision, even as AI use itself keeps climbing. The report, “Human-AI Trust in the Workplace,” published August 7, 2026, surveyed 1,006 U.S. employed adults in June 2026 and found 74% default to their own judgment first, while 72% would follow a coworker’s or manager’s call over a conflicting AI output. For high-stakes, time-sensitive decisions, reliance on human judgment rises to 93%.

Why it matters: The finding cuts against a common HR technology assumption: that rising AI usage means rising AI trust. Resume Now’s data shows the two moving on separate tracks. Workers keep adopting AI for lower-stakes tasks like research and drafting, but draw a hard line around decisions involving context, accountability, or judgment, exactly the categories most HR processes fall into. Resume Now’s own reading of the data, in a report authored by career expert Keith Spencer, is that workers are not anti-AI: they are willing to use it, but not where the work requires context, accountability, or strategic judgment. The survey also found 51% of workers expect disclosure whenever AI touches work content, a transparency bar HR teams rolling out AI tools have not always built into their plans.

The insight: The gap between AI use and AI trust is a governance opening, not a problem to engineer around. The 93% figure on high-stakes decisions is closer to a mandate: build AI-assisted workflows that keep a named human visibly accountable for the final call, and disclose when AI touched the process. Recent reporting on manager readiness found a related gap: most HR departments believe their managers are ready to lead with AI while managers themselves report they are not, suggesting the accountability layer workers want is often missing on the manager side too. It echoes a broader pattern in how organizations train people to work alongside AI at all: structured training, not just tool access, is what separates organizations getting real value from AI adoption.
