Employers Want AI-Native Talent, But Fewer Than 1 in 6 Workers Qualify, Indeed Finds

A survey of 1,301 U.S. respondents by Indeed and YouGov, fielded in late May and early June 2026 among 1,001 job seekers and 300 hiring decision makers at companies with 500 or more employees, found 59 percent of employers consider hiring AI native talent essential or important within the next 12 months, and 45 percent are already recruiting specifically for it. Thirty one percent expect AI fluency to be required for nearly all roles within two years. On the other side of that demand, fewer than 1 in 6 workers currently consider themselves AI native, and 52 percent say their employer has not provided adequate AI training.

The gap sits squarely in HR’s lap because it touches hiring criteria, learning content, and manager readiness at the same time. Only 45 percent of managers say they feel equipped to lead employees with strong AI skills, and 48 percent of managers currently leading self identified AI natives admit their direct reports outskill them on AI specifically. Employers who are actively recruiting for AI native talent are far more likely to also invest in manager training for it, 88 percent versus just 8 percent among employers not recruiting for it, which suggests the hiring criterion and the training investment move together rather than one substituting for the other. “AI assists with tasks, but humans still lead the work,” said Maggie Hulce, Indeed’s chief revenue officer, in the company’s release of the findings.

The original insight for HR platform and workforce planning teams: this labeling problem, “AI native” as a hiring filter, sits next to a related finding published this week showing workers are already doing AI assisted work well outside their formal job scope, whether or not an employer has certified them as AI native. Screening for a label risks passing over people already doing the work informally, while the more defensible fix, per both data sets, is investing in structured training and manager support rather than in a hiring filter that most of the current workforce cannot yet clear.
