AI hiring demand is now a measurable driver of why young adults cannot find their first foothold in the labor market, not just a background trend. Research from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, published June 30, found that rising demand for AI-related jobs explained roughly 45% of the decline in the employment-to-population ratio for workers aged 18 to 24 between April 2023 and December 2025, and about a third of the increase in their unemployment rate.

Economists William Rodgers III and Alice Kassens tracked the employment-to-population ratio for 18-to-24-year-olds falling 2.24 percentage points over the period, while their unemployment rate rose 3.51 points and labor force participation slipped 0.35 points. Using Current Population Survey data linked to JOLTS job-openings figures and Lightcast postings data across 10 AI skill clusters, the researchers found overall job openings were the dominant factor, but AI demand was the second-largest driver, ahead of foreign-born population shifts or manufacturing contraction. Recent graduates were still finding jobs at relatively high rates, 79% nationally in the first quarter of 2026, but their concentration in entry-level roles is a specific vulnerability as AI raises the skill bar for those jobs. The deterioration was sharpest for Black new entrants with a high school education or less, whose employment-to-population ratio fell 6.27 points while unemployment rose 12.75 points.

The original insight is what the data does not show: broad-based AI job destruction. As the researchers put it, AI is not eliminating jobs across the economy so much as raising the entry bar for the first rung, concentrating its impact on the group with the least experience to clear it.
