New York executive search firm JW Michaels & Co. released its 2027 Salary Guide on 2 November, a free benchmark for legal, compliance, finance, operations, investment, technology and HR roles. It draws on the firm’s placements from January through October 2026. Legal, compliance and legal support roles made up 70% of those placements, and 68% were at investment firms such as hedge funds and asset managers.

Why it matters

The guide reports that most ranges rose 5% to 10% at the midpoint since the firm’s 2024 report, with a typical move of about 7%. It puts the median accepted base salary at $130,000 for compliance analysts through senior associates and $225,000 for in-house counsel.

Average US salary increase budgets for 2027 are projected at 3.4% to 3.5%, according to WTW and Payscale. A typical 7% move across the two years since 2024 is close to two years of budgets at that rate, so for most of these roles the guide does not show specialist pay running far ahead of ordinary merit budgets. The exception sits at the top of the 5% to 10% band, and in hedge fund bonus pools, which Johnson Associates projects will rise 5% to 15% from 2025.

What HR teams can take from it

The guide’s new 2027 regulatory calendar ties deadlines, including Treasury clearing, Form PF and the GENIUS Act, to the roles they put in demand. For HR teams at financial firms, that calendar works as a hiring forecast for compliance roles. Comp teams can price those roles from the ranges at the top of the band now instead of waiting for offers to be turned down. We have covered the same pressure in other specialist roles, where AI skills pay is outrunning salary structures, and in pay data vendors moving into talent suites.

“Compensation conversations move faster when both sides start from the same data,” said Jason Wachtel, co-founder and managing partner of JW Michaels & Co.
