A survey of 463 talent acquisition professionals across healthcare, manufacturing, retail, hospitality, transportation and construction, run by iCIMS and Lighthouse Research & Advisory in the first quarter of 2026, found that 75% of high-volume employers say AI has reduced recruiter workload, and 48% are actively increasing their AI investment because of results they have already seen. The heaviest AI usage clusters around resume screening, candidate sourcing, interview scheduling and candidate communications, the repetitive steps that eat recruiter time in roles that generate the most applicant volume.
The finding that matters more than the workload number is what leadership is now measuring. Sixty-one percent of respondents said quality of hire, not speed or cost per hire, is leadership’s top priority, and 62% said selecting the most capable candidate outranks filling the role fast. That is a shift from how high-volume hiring has historically run, where velocity was the point because frontline roles were treated as interchangeable. If AI has freed up enough recruiter time for quality to compete with speed, it changes what “high-volume” recruiting technology is supposed to optimize for.
“High-volume employers need better ways to identify who can actually do the work, move qualified talent through the process faster and make better hiring decisions at scale,” said Ben Eubanks, chief research officer at Lighthouse Research & Advisory. The survey also found 42% of employers saw hiring demand exceed their forecasts this year, and that compliance and fraud detection, not further screening automation, now rank as the top priority for where employers want to expand AI investment next, a sign that high-volume hiring’s AI phase is moving from efficiency to risk management. Lisa Fiondella, ICIMS SVP of AI, data and high-volume hiring, said the goal is to help recruiters “reduce administrative work, focus on qualified talent and keep the hiring process moving,” which frames the technology as protecting recruiter judgment rather than replacing it, a step beyond how earlier sourcing-agent tools were pitched, and consistent with conversational AI’s move into core ATS infrastructure.
